No SEZ proposed at Nandigram: Centre

The Centre said there is no proposal to set up a special economic zone at Nandigram in West Bengal, where fresh violence erupted Sunday over the issue of land acquisition for industrial projects.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday said there is no proposal to set up a special economic zone at Nandigram in West Bengal, where fresh violence erupted Sunday over the issue of land acquisition for industrial projects.

"No SEZ is being set up at Nandigram. Also, there is no application proposing to set up an SEZ at Nandigram," a Commerce Ministry statement said.

It said certain reports have been appearing in a section of the press regarding opposition to setting up of an SEZ at Nandigram.
Nandigram witnessed renewed violence yesterday in which three people were killed in a bomb blast during a bandh being observed in the area at the call of an organisation opposing land acquisition for industries.

Earlier, the state government had to withdraw a proposal from Indonesia's Salim Group to set up a chemical zone at Nandigram, which had witnessed violent protests over land acquisition for the project.
