No professional tax in Khasi Hills area: CEM

There will be no imposition of professional tax in Meghalaya's Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) area, newly-elected chief executive member (CEM) C B Syiem said.

SHILLONG: There will be no imposition of professional tax in Meghalaya's Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) area, newly-elected chief executive member (CEM) C B Syiem said.

Syiem, elected in a special session on Thursday, said the previous executive committee of KHADC awarded collection of professional tax to boost KHADC's coffers position.

The state government also consented to collect tax. Election to the CEM post was necessitated after United Democratic Alliances (UDA) executive committee headed by Congress strongman H S Shylla was removed from power by the party leadership on February 5.

Shylla reportedly fell out with the leadership of Congress and regional parties.

Congratulating Syiem, R V Lyngdoh of Congress asked him to consult members of all parties in the Council on policy matters.

Syiem said the new executive committee would inquire into the construction of MawthabahWahkaji Road funded by Uranium Corporation of India Limited in West Khasi Hills district.
