KOCHI: The government of Kerala has decided to exempt cashew farms from land ceiling under the Land Reforms Act. The cashew industry in the state had been demanding plantation status for cashew and its exemption from the purview of land ceiling laws for the last 40 years.
This measures, the industry had been pointing out, would boost the production of raw cashew nuts within the state and reduce its dependence on imports.
Kerala, which was number one in the production of raw cashewnuts till a few years ago, lost this position over a period of time. At present, the production is only 20% of the requirement of the cashew production units in the state.
The state government has now decided to promulgate the ordinance exempting cashew farms from the land ceiling under the Land Reforms Act.
The cashew industry in the state urged the government to expedite the ordinance amending the Kerala Land Reforms Act, in a release issued here today.
Mr P Bharathan Pillai, chairman of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India, congratulated the state’s revenue minister Mr K M Mani for taking a realistic view on the matter and prevailing upon the government to accede to the long-standing request of the industry.
