NITI Aayog to chalk out strategies for improving road, rail and air connectivity in North-East

In a major boost to infrastructure development in the north-east, NITI Aayog will soon hold a high-level meeting to chalk out strategies for improving road, rail and air connectivity in the regions besides focussing on improving hydel power production and organics farming in the states.

The first meeting of newly constituted NITI forum for north-east will be held in Tripura on Tuesday under Aayog’s vice chairman Rajiv Kumar, minister of state (independent charge), ministry of development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), and chief ministers of north-east states.

The ‘NITI Forum for North East’ was constituted in February 2018 with an aim to ensure sustainable economic growth of the north eastern region (NER) of the country and periodically review the development status in NER.


The forum includes representation from all north-east states, their chief secretaries and secretaries of relevant central ministries/departments and directors of IITs and IIM.

“The idea is to identify and target early bird projects in areas of connectivity, agricultural productivity and industrial development to give fillip to growth in the NER,” the Aayog said on Monday.

“The focus of the meeting will be to strategise ways for improving infrastructure in the region, utilizing existing potential for hydro-power, agriculture and allied sectors, water management and promotion of Tourism,” Aayog added.
