NEW DELHI: To keep pace with advanced technology in the boiler industry, there is a need to revisit the Indian Boilers Regulations (IBR) Act, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry EMS Natchiappan has said.

"There is a need to revisit the IBR Act and regulations and updating of the same to keep pace with new and advance technology," Natchiappan said at a CII event yesterday.

IBR is Indian Boiler Regulations, which was created on September 15, 1950, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 28 & 29 of the Indian Boilers Act. The Indian Boilers Act was formed on February 23, 1923 to consolidate and amend the law relating to steam boilers.

Besides, the country's boiler industry should explore ways and means to utilise solar power instead of other fuels, given the limitations and consequences of using thermal and nuclear energy, Natchiappan said.

"A joint effort between the government and the industry is vital to enable the boiler industry to be globally competitive," Executive Director of Thermax Pravin Karve said.
