'Need for reorientation of investment policy in agri sector'

India needs to reorient its investment policies in the agriculture sector to face challenges such as food security and climate change, State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today said.

NEW DELHI: India needs to reorient its investment policies in the agriculture sector to face challenges such as food security and climate change, State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today said.

"The country should reorient its investment policy to boost agriculture in the country, which is worse affected due to climate change, and must encourage induction of new agriculture strategies to alleviate hunger and poverty," Tharoor said at the three-day international conference here.

Outlining the common problems faced by India and Latin America, Tharoor also called for an investment regime where Indian entrepreneurs could take advantage of the Latin American countries' in farming and leasing out lands.

High food prices, diminishing returns from land and climate change have posed challenges for the farming community in these nations.

"I hope governments and the industry will implement this action plan through joint agriculture cooperation," he added.
