NE bridge between Indian and east, south-east Asia economies

By gradually integrating the region through cross border market access, the Northeastern states could connect the Indian economy with the fastest-growing economies of South-East and East Asian countries, Mukherjee said inaugurating a national conference on India's Look-East Policy -- Challenges for Sub-Regional Cooperation here.
"Geography is opportunity and the very geographical location of the Northeast makes it the doorway to south-east Asia and vice-versa," he said.
The Union minister lamented that despite having borders with five Asian countries, the region suffered due to poor connectivity, but today it is benefiting from the "new dynamics of regional cooperation...this enormous geographical proximity along with shared culture and customs provides for considerable synergy".
Asserting that the development of the Northeast was a central concern of the UPA government, the minister said the new Look-East policy will develop with the local economy and bilateral trade between the countries.
