NEW DELHI: In an effort to reduce regional disparity, Madhya Pradesh today advocated provision of incentives for private industries in the tribal areas at par with the special category states.
"The existing excise duty exemptions for hilly states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have resulted in the flight of capital from other states..a similar programme of infrastructure development needs to be taken up in other backward regions, particularly in tribal areas," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in his speech at the National Development Council meeting here today.
Chouhan said the funds provided for the maintenance of National Highways were "awfully inadequate" and states like MP were "deprived not only of the funds for the up-gradation of National Highways but also for their proper maintenance."
Stating that agriculture was "continuously becoming non-profitable", he called for a review of the formula for determining the cost of cultivation for minimum support price system after an objective study of the relative costs.
There has been an undue delay in the implementation of the central legislation for protecting tribal rights, he said,
and appealed for notifying the required subordinate legislation, guidelines and rules, and recording the long overdue rights of tribals in the prescribed time."
