More than 8 cr ITRs filed for first time ever: I-T Dept

Over eight crore Income Tax Returns have been filed in the Assessment Year 2023-24, surpassing previous year's 7,51,60,817 mark, according to the I-T department.

In a first, more than eight crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) have been filed so far in the Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24, the I-T department said on Friday.

Notably, the total filings for AY 2022-23 were recorded at 7,51,60,817.

"Income-tax Department expresses its gratitude to all the taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us cross the 8-crore mark," the taxman said in a post on X.



On October 31, the department had informed about a record number of over 7.85 crore ITRs were filed.

"The total number of ITRs for AY 2023-24 filed till 31st October, 2023 is more than 7.65 crore, which is 11.7 per cent higher compared to the total number of ITRs of 6.85 crore for AY 2022-23 filed till November 7, 2022, the due date for filing such ITRs in the preceding year," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement.

The last date for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for income earned in 2022-23 was July 31, 2023. Assesses who wish to file return after the due date can do so by December 31 upon payment of a penalty.

The total net direct tax collection during 2022-23 is Rs 16.63 lakh crore out of which income tax collection is Rs 8.08 lakh crore.
