Modi government gives retired teachers a reason to smile

The Modi government on Monday took a decision to revise the pension of retired faculty and other non-teaching staff in central universities and colleges. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said the government has revised pension of retired faculty and other non-teaching staff in central universities and colleges as per the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission.

Javadekar tweeted, "Around 25000 present pensioners will benefit in Central Universities and #UGC maintained #Deemed to be #Universities." Pensioners will get benefits to the tune of Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 18,000." More than 23 lakh retired teaching and non- teaching staff are to benefit.



The Minister added, "This move of govt will benefit approx 8 lakh teachers & 15 lakh non –teaching staff who retired from State Public Universities & affiliated colleges, who wish to adopt or have adopted Pay Scales prescribed for Central Universities."

119 centrally funded technical institutions like IITs and IIMs will be covered under the pension revision. Teachers from 329 state government funded universities and more than 12,000 colleges affiliated to the state public universities can benefit from the decision of the centre government.

In October, the Union Cabinet gave a thumbs-up to revise pay scales for teachers and academic staff of higher educational institutions following the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission.
