Maha okays 26 projects for JNNURM

The Maharashtra government has approved 26 new infrastructure projects for the Centre’s consideration under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).


MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has approved 26 new infrastructure projects for the Centre’s consideration under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The state’s steering committee on the JNNURM cleared these projects worth Rs 3,395 crore at a meeting on Thursday.


Now, the state will submit detailed project reports (DPR) of these 26 proposals to the Centre for grants under JNNURM, urban development officials said. The new proposals take the total number of projects being considered for Maharashtra under the JNNURM to 132, which is worth Rs 27,000 crore.

So far, the Centre has approved 47 projects worth Rs 6,396 crore for urban conglomerates of Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nagpur, Nashik, Nanded and Latur.

Under the JNNURM, the Centre bears 35% of the cost while the local body and the state have to contribute 50% and 15% respectively.

The steering committee, headed by chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, okayed 11 projects worth Rs 1,258 crore for MMR and 15 projects of Rs 2,137-crore size for other selected cities. Pune has got the largest share in the projects approved on Thursday in terms of cost.

The committee has also given nod to additional components of Bus Rapid Transport System in Pune, which works to Rs 583 crore.

TC Benjamin, principal secretary, urban development, told ET that the additional components of the BRTS have been approved in view of the Commonwealth Games to be held in Pune in 2008.
