Larger incentives for solar plants in works

NEW DELHI: The government plans to expand the coverage of an incentive scheme meant to encourage investments into solar-thermal power plants in line with prime minister Manmohan Singhs emphasis on solar energy to reduce dependence on petroleum.

The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) is set to expand its scheme which gives an incentive of Rs 10 a unit for promoters of grid-connected solar thermal power plants. Once done, a single power plant owner, who now gets the incentive for power generation up to a maximum of 5 mw, may get the sop for producing more power.

We had earlier planned to give incentives for generating an additional 50 mw across the country from solar plants and have asked for expressions of interest for that. We have received tremendous response from the industry. As of now, the plan is on demonstration but we are discussing the possibility of increasing the capacity of the scheme to allow more players in the segment, outgoing MNRE secretary V Subramanian said.

The ministry has been under pressure from the industry on the issue for quite some time now. As of now, it provides an incentive of Rs 10 per unit for grid-connected solar thermal power plants to a maximum of 5 mw from a single promoter.
