Kerala government announces succour to farmers
The Kerala government on Wednesday announced Rs 10,000 per hectare as special financial assistance to farmers who lost their paddy crops during the recent unseasonal rains in the state.
As per a preliminary estimate, 1.40 lakh tonnes of paddy cultivated in 28,231 hectares was damaged in the rains and 40,826 farmers suffered losses, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
Proportionate compensation would be given to farmers who lost paddy crops partially, the chief minister said, adding the distribution of compensation would start tomorrow.
Most damage was reported from Kuttanad in Alapuzha district, considered to be the state's rice bowl. Paddy crops in 17,000 hectares of area were destroyed, Achuthanandan said.
District collectors have been asked to prepare a report on damage to other crops as well in the rains such as mango, cashew, banana and pepper, the chief minister said adding steps would be taken to pay compensation to these farmers.
Achuthanandan said apart from the already sanctioned Rs 12 crore for the compensation, an additional Rs 13 crore would be necessary for meeting the farmers needs.
"State government has sought Centre's assistance to meet the challenge." A three-member Central team to assess the damage caused by the rain would arrive soon, he said.
