J&K govt to introduce drip irrigation facility in Baramulla

To increase the production of apples in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to introduce drip irrigation facility to over 2500 hectare of orchard land in Baramulla district.

SRINAGAR: To increase the production of apples in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to introduce drip irrigation facility to over 2500 hectare of orchard land in Baramulla district.

"The project costing about Rs 25 crore would provide assured irrigation and water supply to orchards for ensuring manifold increase in production and productivity," Horticulture Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir said here.

Mir said Baramulla is the main apple producing area in the state and government has decided to provide all modern horticulture technology to the fruit growers here.

"Modern spray pumps, on-farm handling units, cold storage facilities and community water storage reservoirs under technology mission were being provided to the fruit growers on 50 per cent subsidy to enhance their production capability," he said.

The minister also said that the scope of Rs 78 crore hi-lift irrigation project would be extended to Batapora and Rawoocha areas in order to cover additional 1000 hectare of land under assured irrigation facility.
