The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a Bill on Friday seeking to save the land under saffron cultivation, besides regulate its quality.

JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a Bill on Friday seeking to save the land under saffron cultivation, besides regulate its quality.
The Bill was passed by a voice-vote incorporating some minor changes.
Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir agriculture minister A A Zargar informed the house that the government had taken several measures, besides setting up a research wing in Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture and Science Technology at Baribal to improve saffron production.
The bill envisages provisions for checking adulteration that resulted in a great setback to the rates in the national and international market and saving the land under saffron cultivation.
Implementation of the Act would help in regulating the quality of saffron going out to markets from here, Zargar said, adding research centre set up at Baribal was also working towards reviving its production by providing technical support.
Last year, the production had demonstrated an upward trend with a yield of 150 quintals as against only 70 quintals the preceding year, he said
