Jetco to give Indo-UK trade a leg up

India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (Jetco) will function as a key mechanism to boost trade & economic co-operation between the two countries, commerce.

NEW DELHI: India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (Jetco) will function as a key mechanism to boost trade & economic co-operation between the two countries, commerce & industry minister Kamal Nath said on Thursday.

During a meeting with Alan Johnson, British secretary of state for trade & industry, he said Jetco must be used as an effective tool to promote India-UK partnership, apart from being an institutional mechanism to review the status of bilateral trade, reports Our Delhi Bureau.

Mr Johnsons view was that Jetco would help identify opportunities for better economic ties between the two countries. Taking heavy-handed measures against outsourcing or offshoring would be wrong, he felt. Outsourcing can and should benefit both the European Union and India alike.

Emphasising that Jetco must have an agricultural focus; Kamal Nath suggested the setting up of a working group on transfer of technology and investment in the food-processing sector in India.

During his discussions with Mr Johnson, he touched on Indias interest for early convening of the India-UK Investment summit, particularly in the context of the large investment opportunities emerging in India in the infrastructure sector.
