The Centre on Monday asked the states to introduce systems to facilitate quick information management during natural calamities.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday asked the states to introduce systems to facilitate quick information management during natural calamities.
The direction was given by Secretary (Border Management) in the Union Home Ministry U N Panjiar at the annual conference here of State Relief Commissioners and Secretaries incharge of disaster management.
Suggesting that the States should alert concerned authorities promptly during disasters, he said they should also set up their search and rescue teams and provide them specialised training and necessary equipment.
These teams could cater to the needs of not only the concerned state but also other states during crisis, he said.
Inaugurating the conference to held to review the status of preparedness for the South-West Monsoon, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta said there was a need to put in place Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to deal with various situations required to be handled during disasters.
These SOPs, he said, could relate to rescue operations or even supply of food grains.
He said it was essential to respond immediately and effectively to disaster situations and added that some simulation exercises should be undertaken to identify gaps in coordination and planning.
Gupta also drew the attention of the delegates towards the importance of prevention and mitigation aspects of disaster management.
