Interest free loans for farmers on the cards: Minister

CPI-M-led LDF government in Kerala is planning a scheme to provide interest free loans to farmers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI-M-led LDF government in Kerala is planning a scheme to provide interest free loans to farmers, State Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said on Saturday.

This scheme also would come up for discussion among other plans to boost agriculture production in the special cabinet meeting slated for April 22,Issac told reporters after holding a meeting with National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development officials here.

NABARD has promised Rs 1000 crore loan for different projects in the current fiscal year,Issac said, adding, out of this Rs.500 crore would be utilised for completing the irrigation and drinking water supply schemes.

A comprehensive programme to ensure the state's food security was also planned, he said.

The development work of ports that received clearance would be started this year.Similarly, the work of Rail Overbridges also would be taken up, he said.
