Innovations necessary for economic development: Kalam
Innovations are necessary for the economic development of the country as it impacts the largest section of the society, former President APJ Abdul Kalam said on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: Innovations are necessary for the economic development of the country as it impacts the largest section of the society, former President APJ Abdul Kalam said on Saturday.
"Innovations are necessary as it impacts the larger section of the society, especially the rural sector, and is also important for prompting economic prosperity of the nation," Kalam said after presenting the second EMPI-Indian Express "Indian Innovation Awards 2006" here today.
Stressing on the need to promote innovations not only in the field of technology but also in economic, political, social and other fields, he said, "India stands at 23 position in this years innovative index, the United States tops the list, while Germany holds the second place."
"The innovations should fulfil the basic needs of the total system, with a focus on development," he said, adding so as to bridge the urban and rural divide.
Kalam felicitated 14 private sector companies and government organisations for using innovative methods that benefited a larger section of the society.
The awards, launched in 2005, are first of its kind to give recognition to the innovative organisations in the country and encourage people to look at positives in the society.
Kerala State Transport Corporation received gold trophy for successfully delivering "multiple end results" ranging from quality customer care, environment protection and fuel conservation to better overall use of available resources and becoming the role model for other PSUs.
