CHANDIGARH: With the government laying thrust on launching e-governance programme across the country at large scale, the Department of Information Technology is expecting a jump of Rs. 200 crore for the allocation of e-governance projects in the forthcoming budget.

"In the coming budget, we are hoping an allocation of Rs. 1500 crore for introducing e-governance projects including setting up IT infrastructure in government departments against last year's allocation of Rs. 1300 crore," Department of Information Technology, Additional Secretary, R. Chandershekhar told reporters on Thursday.

The department is also expecting that about 15-16 states would also be covered under State Wide Area Network (SWAN) by the end of this year which would enable the government department to work effectively. "Presently, SWAN has been introduced in four states namely Haryana, Jharkhand, Tamilnadu and Himachal Pradesh. We expect that 15-16 states will also be brought under the SWAN by December 2008," he said.

As part of the initiative of National e-Governance Plan adopted by the Central Government, the department further feels that about one lakh Common Services Centres in six lakh villages across India would be set up which would bring convenient services to the doorstep of the citizens in both urban and rural areas.
