DUBAI: India and Bahrain would discuss the contours of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on labour and manpower issues during a visit by Indian Overseas Minister Vayalar Ravi to the Arab country.

The minister who begins his three-day visit to Bahrain tomorrow, however, will not be sign the MoU during the trip. Ravi will meet Bahrain's top leadership as well as hold talks with Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi, Indian Ambassador to Bahrian Balkrishna Shetty told PTI over phone from Manama. Shetty said the minister will be briefed on the labour market situation at a meeting at the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) tomorrow.

The LMRA chief executive Ali Radhi will brief Ravi on the impact of the new labour rules which will come into effect in Bahrain from next year, following the end of the five-month amnesty. Bahrain is planning to have a new labour law wherein the current sponsorship scheme will be replaced. On his part, Ravi will highlight measures taken to protect the interests of Indian workers in the Gulf like the proposed amendment to the Indian Emigration Act, which aims to eliminate the exploitation of job-seekers by recruiting agencies in India.

The ambassador said the Indian embassy has started implementing a new wage structure for Indian workers, starting with fixing a minimum monthly wage of BD100 for housemaids as well as a mobile phone. Shetty said that a similar wage structure for other categories of workers will be fixed by the Indian government in the coming months.
