India and Malaysia hope to conclude negotiations on a bilateral agreement in trade and services by March 2009, a senior Indian official said.

KUALA LUMPUR: India and Malaysia hope to conclude negotiations on a bilateral agreement in trade and services by March 2009, a senior Indian official said.

Officials from both countries met here at the first meeting of the Trade Negotiating Committee (TNC) on proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) last evening.

"The two sides agreed to fast track the negotiations and complete them by March 2009," Indian envoy to Malaysia Ashok Kantha told PTI today. The CECA will include FTA in trade, FTA in services among other areas, he added.

The CECA will also cover financial services, telecommunications, temporary movement of persons, ICT, biotechnology etc.

The two sides finalised the overall architecture and the road-map of the landmarked CECA aimed at forging a long-term, comprehensive and dynamic economic partnership between the two countries.

Officials also outlined the scope of coverage in Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, Investment and other areas of Economic Cooperation, and constituted Working Groups to further discuss these issues.

The next meeting of the TNC will be held from April 10-12 2008 in New Delhi.
