India has many advantages to achieve its manufacturing ambitions but it needs to find a style that works best for its manufacturing sector rather than simply following other countries' experience in development, according to a Chinese state media.

Global Times, which has the backing of China's ruling Communist Party, said that "India created an impressive economic miracle" after its independence but its "economic rise remains fragile due to uncertainty in its manufacturing sector".

Acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, Global Times said that it displays India's ambitions for manufacturing development. It referred to Modi administration's "Make in India" campaign and the roll out of GST as appropriate steps to boost manufacturing in the country.

However, it cited the fall in the percentage of the manufacturing industry in India's GDP fell to 15 percent in 2017 from 17.4 percent in 2006 as the sign of India's de-industrialization, and added that it is "in contrast to its manufacturing goals".

"India has some key advantages for manufacturing, such as a demographic dividend, expanding consumption and the accelerating development of the information technology sector. At the same time, the country faces challenges such as a high illiteracy rate and weak industrial infrastructure," the Global Times opined.

The country should avoid competing on the same basis as other emerging economies and develop based on its own characteristics, it suggested.
