'Impose cess to check water abuse'

Montek Singh Ahluwalia has suggested a cess on electricity use to prevent rampant exploitation of groundwater in the country.

Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Wednesday suggested a cess on electricity use to prevent rampant exploitation of groundwater in the country.

���We have large blocks in the country where water is literally mined. A cess on electricity would not just prevent usage of heavy-duty motors but also ensure that water distribution is equitable as groundwater is not used by the landless labourers,��� he said.
