NEW DELHI: Agricultural scientists have to realign their research activities keeping in view the emerging Intellectual Property Rights regime by adopting a long term perspective on patent related issues, an expert has said.

"All stakeholders, including the private sector should come to a common platform objectively following a long term vision on patent related issues," Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research Mangala Rai said at a three-day national conference on 'IPR and Management of Agricultural Research'.

He urged science fraternity to realign focus on patent related issues in order to protect their intellectual rights.

"In a changing global order and IPR regime, one who does not act to realign would lag behind," he said and stressed on the need to develop a roadmap, explicitly outlining the plan of action for the future on upholding intellectual property rights in the field of farm and allied sciences.

The ICAR DG also categorically asked animal, dairy and fish scientists to start initiating action to meet future IPR challenges in an era of free market economy.

"We must remember there is absolutely no barrier to free flow of genes in a well developed scientific world order," he said, adding the need of the hour was to come out with a roadmap and workable action plan to protect indigenous rights on gene pool.

The WTO regime, effective from January 1, 2005, brought agriculture at par with other sectors in respect of trade, intellectual property and services.
