HRD ministry forms panel to check role of IIM chairman

The HRD ministry has asked a committee to submit the report on the role of chairman. “The report has to be submitted in a month. The committee has been asked to broadly mention on the role and responsibilities of chairman,” said a source.
According to sources, this has come after the chairmen expressed displeasure to the HRD ministry on how their job is merely ‘ceremonial’.
The memorandum of IIMs does not talk much about the role of chairman. The IIMs have industry bigwigs as chairmen of the institutes boards. While Mukesh Ambani heads the board of IIM-Bangalore, Vijaypath Singhania, is the chairman of the board of Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad.
Ajit Balakrishnan, who heads Rediff, is the chairman of the board of IIM-Calcutta. The Indian Institute of Management chairmen are appointed by the HRD ministry for a five-year term.
The report is to be submitted by the review committee appointed by the ministry recently. The review committee, headed by former Maruti Udyog chairman RC Bhargava, is already reviewing the working of IIMs. With this, the role of chairman at each institute will be clearly defined.
Earlier the review committees reviewed the working of IIMs twice. With the role being clearly defined, the board chairmen are expected to get more decision making powers. They might also play a key role in deciding the future course of action and expansion plans.
