To promote cultivation of sunflower crop, the Haryana Agriculture Department has decided to give subsidy amounting to Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of the cost of the hybrid sunflower seed to the farmers under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna.

CHANDIGARH: To promote cultivation of sunflower crop, the Haryana Agriculture Department has decided to give subsidy amounting to Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of the cost of the hybrid sunflower seed to the farmers under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna.

A sum of Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for this purpose during the current financial year, Haryana Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha said.

The assistance of Rs 1 crore would cover 20,000 hectares of area requiring 1,000 quintals hybrid seeds, he added.

Good quality hybrid seed was the only important ingredient needed to give impetus to sunflower cultivation. Hybrid seeds available with private sector firms cost Rs 250 per kg and 5 kg seeds are needed for covering one hectare of area.

Chatha said the subsidy would be available on certified and labeled seed of identified high-yielding hybrid sunflower developed by both public and private sector firms. Further, subsidy would be admissible on hybrid seed bought by the farmers from government agencies as well as private traders.

Sunflower was a short duration crop as it takes 90 to 100 days in maturity and gives good return to the farmers if sown timely from January 15 to February 15, he said.

Huge potential of sunflower cultivation, which is an important oilseed crop next to mustard, exists in the state. Plus a subsidy of Rs 1,200 per quintal was also available under the Integrated Scheme of oil seed pulses and maize for the cultivation of the crop, he said.

Sunflower contains about 40 per cent high-quality oil and high-amount of quality protein in cake. It can be grown throughout the year over a range of soil conditions with variation in yield, oil content and maturity period.
Farmers can harvest a yield of up to 25 quintals per hectare by adopting improved practices for cultivation.
