The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has sought a budget of Rs 1,050 crore under the 11th Plan for the development of clusters.
"We have have already submitted the proposal to the Planning Commission," MSMEs Secretary Chandra Pal told media.
There are many existing industrial enclaves like Panipat, Ludhiana, Moradabad, Aligarh and Tirpur which have grown, thanks to the enterprise skill available in these areas.
Enthused by their success, the government wants to develop 250 new clusters across the country.
Pal said these industrial enclaves would be developed in the backward areas. They would include multi-product clusters along with centres for skill development and technical know-how for entrepreneurs.
The ministry is planning to set up an agency which would be responsible for upgrading technology, besides providing other facilities such as marketing to the units in these areas, he added.
About 100 clusters have been identified which needs immediate attention in terms of technological upgrade and other facilities. This, Pal said, is essential to improve the quality and make their products globally competitive.
Around 40 per cent of India's exports are contributed by MSME sector,he said.
"In the 11th Five-Year Plan, we have a target to generate 1.3 million jobs per annum. We also want private sector participation in skill and cluster development," he added.
