Govt to implement slew of measures for IPR development

The government is planning to invest Rs 300 crore over the next five years to modernise Intellectual Property offices in the country with a view to taking them on par with global standards.

NEW DELHI: The government is planning to invest Rs 300 crore over the next five years to modernise Intellectual Property offices in the country with a view to taking them on par with global standards.

It has recently completed a Rs 153 crore modernisation programme for setting up modern integrated intellectual property offices at Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

"An additional Rs 300 crore would be invested over the next five years to further modernise IP Offices so as to make them world class," an official release said today.

As part of efforts to ensure an effective IP regime in the country, the government is also setting up a National Institute of Intellectual Property Management in Nagpur.

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath would lay the foundation stone of the Institute tomorrow.

Being set up at a cost of Rs 22 crore, the premises would be constructed in a year. However, it is proposed to commence academic programmes in the premises of the existing Intellectual Property Training Institute in Nagpur.

"NIIPM would cater to the needs of an Intellectual Property regime that is in line with global norms, and at the same time safeguards national interests," the release said.

Setting up of NIIPM follows the launch of e-filing facility for patent and trademark applications by Nath last month.

The institute would focus on training, education and research, besides being a think-tank of the government on important IP policy matters. It would conduct training programmes for examiners of patents, designs, trade marks and Geographical Indications, besides for others experts in the field.
