Govt rolls out secretary-level bureaucratic reshuffle

In a major bureaucratic reshuffle, govt has cleared appointments of four new secretaries.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has appointed P.V.Bhide (1973, IAS, Andhra Pradesh) as the new Revenue Secretary in Finance Ministry. He will head the revenue department in place of K.M.Chandrasekhar who would takeover as Cabinet Secretary tomorrow.
Currently, Bhide is the Secretary in Department of Disinvestment which continues to be part of the Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram’s domain.
Bhide will be assisted by V.M.Singh as chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Similarly, N.C.Singhal has been appointed as the Chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). Both of them are already on the respective boards as members.
With revenue department getting important new bureaucratic heads, the Finance Minister has completed reconstitution of his key team.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister has appointed Arun Ramanathan as Petrochemicals Secretary. Ramanathan, a 1973 batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu is currently posted in the state cadre.
Sources divulged that green signal was given to Nina Gupta (1971, IAS, Orissa) for taking over as the Environment and Forests Secretary. She moves from her current posting as Tribal Welfare Secretary. Her present assignment would be taken by Gautam Mukherjee (IAS, Orissa, 1973) presently in the state cadre.
R.C.Joshi (IAS, 1973, Maharastra) has been appointed as member in the Space Commission with the rank of Secretary to Government of India. Currently, he is additional secretary in the Atomic energy Commission.
This is the last major secretary level bureaucratic reshuffle undertaken with B.K.Chaturvedi as Cabinet Secretary.
