NEW DELHI: Coming down on the suggestive Lux Cosy undergarment advertisement, the Government today issued a notification restraining the transmission or retransmission of the advertisement on television channels.

The advertisement, which features a semi-clad male and female model along with a dog, was till recently being shown on various television channels.

Ministry of information and broadcasting in the notice stated that the advertisement has been "found indecent, vulgar and suggestive and thus violative of Rule 7 (8) of the Advertising Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and rules framed thereunder".

Exercising its power under Sub Section (3) of Section 20 of the aforementioned Act, the ministry says that "it hereby prohibits transmission or retransmission of the advertisement".

It has advised television channels "to be careful in future in selection of content of advertisements". The ministry has also directed the channels to strictly adhere to the Advertisement Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995 in order not to invite further action under the said Act and Rules.

There were controversies over the airing of Frenchie X undergarments advertisement also recently, which was also found to be suggestive in nature. Its telecast was stopped after the ministry had issued a notification to channels and had even asked them to run a scroll cautioning viewers about the advertisement's content while airing it.

Today's notification reiterates the government's stand on airing of objectionable content on television, as earmarked in its Content Code.
