Govt plans task force to promote women's entrepreneurship

Apart from a policy review to promote women entrepreneurship, the task force will also recommend specific measures and an institutional mechanism to facilitate access to credit.


NEW DELHI: The ministry of commerce and industry is in the process of forming a task force to promote woman entrepreneurship in the country.

Apart from a policy review to promote women entrepreneurship, the task force will also recommend specific measures and an institutional mechanism to facilitate access to credit.

The task force will comprise of women entrepreneurs from all sectors including the services sector and those from North East India. It is learnt that the ministry has asked industry chambers including Assocham, CII and Ficci to provide a list of women entrepreneurs from all specified regions and sectors as nominees for the task force.

The chambers are expected to suggest the names by October-end. When contacted by ET, AK Dua, secretary, department of industrial policy and promotion, which is part of the commerce ministry said, “The proposal to set up the committee was raised by various women entrepreneurs. It will be a major step towards the enhancement of Indian industries particularly those in the manufacturing sector.”

He added, “A policy framework will be designed to promote women entrepreneurs so that they can contribute more to the growth process.”

The agenda of the task force includes increasing synergies between institutions for developing appropriate curriculum for women entrepreneurs, focused on the emerging sectors like IT, food processing, leather and textiles among others.
This apart the task force will also look at ways to improve access of women to national resources including credit.

It will also develop an action plan for strengthening support for marketing including dissemination of requisite market intelligence.

According to Shefali Chaturvedi, director and head, CII social development initiatives, “We are already working with various corporate members to set up self-help groups for women in factory townships. We have been very proactive, especially in the South, and are looking forward to have the same response from other regions as well.”
