Govt planning to cover more items under VKGUY in FTP review
Government on Tuesday said it plans to bring in more products within the ambit of Vishesh Krishi and Gram Udyog Yojana as part of the annual review of the Foreign Trade Policy in April.
"This inclusion shall be done in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, so far as the financial outgo is concerned," Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Over 700 products, including poultry, dairy, fruits and vegetables are listed under the scheme, which is aimed at improving the competitiveness of exporters in the global markets.
In reply to another question, Ramesh said an evaluation of Agri-Export Zones in the country has revealed that the zones were unable to make much headway due to lack of project orientation in their conceptual design, awareness among field functionaries and absence of effective agency to coordinate with implementing agencies.
"Main elements of the remedial action plan are setting up of institutional administrative mechanism for coordinating and monitoring the progress of implementation of AEZs and short- listing a few zones for revival," he said.
He added that Rs 600 crore has been tentatively allocated by the government for the coffee industry through the Coffee Board under the 11th Plan. The Board has set a production target of 3,35,000 MT of coffee for the terminal year of the Plan.
Ramesh said rough diamonds worth 8 billion dollars were imported during April-January 2007-08, posting a growth of 12.32 per cent over the year-ago period. In its pre-budget representation, the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has requested for reduction of customs duty on machinery for designing and manufacturing and exemption from Fringe Benefit Tax incurred on official business purposes, he added.
