Govt monitors performance of Fair Price Shops

NEW DELHI: As many as 4.48 lakh inspections were undertaken in various Fair Price Shops in the country last financial year, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.
Assuring members that the government was monitoring the performance of ration shops, Agriculture, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Sharad Pawar said during Question Hour that as many as 66,825 raids were conducted in various Fair Price Shops (FPS) during 2005-06.
During the current financial year (till February, 2007) licences of 2,634 FPS were suspended as against 16,035 during 2005-06, Pawar said. The Minister said the Centre has been urging state governments and UT administrations to activate vigilance committees and reconstitute them.
Fertiliser: Urea production during 2005-06 stood at 200.90 lakh tonnes as against 202.63 lakh tonnes in 2004-05 and 192.03 lakh tonnes during 2003-04, Minister of State for Fertilisers B.K Handique said.
NSSO: As per a survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), 60 per cent of farmer households at all-India level reported that they like farming as a profession.
Of the 40 per cent who did not like farming as a profession, 27 per cent did not find it profitable, eight per cent thought agriculture was a risky venture and the remaining five per cent disliked it for some reasons including low social status, Pawar said.
