Govt keeps mum on CAG report on NREGA

The Government on Wednesday did not prefer to comment on the audit report of the CAG on National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), saying it was a draft report.

NEW DELHI: The Government on Wednesday did not prefer to comment on the audit report of the CAG on National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), saying it was a draft report.

Minister of State for Rural Development, Chandra Sekhar Sahu, told Rajya Sabha that as it is a draft report, the government would not like to comment on it at this stage. He said the report was submitted to the ministry in December 2007, which had shared its contents with all states.

The CAG report, which had studied the performance of NREGA in 68 districts in 26 states, had pointed out irregularities like diversion of funds and mention of work which does not exist. Sahu informed the Parliament that the states have given their responses to the Centre on the report, which are currently being examined by the ministry.

He said that states' observations would be sent to CAG which would finalise the report after incorporating the responses of states.
