NEW DELHI: Government is formulating a National Postal Policy and has initiated a major exercise to review the structure, products, processes, resources, accounting, pricing and technology requirements, Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

"Government is currently engaged in the process of updating the provisions of Indian Post Office Act, to make it more relevant to times and empower the Postal Services Board, so that the department enjoys more functional autonomy," Minister of State for Communications and IT Shakeel Ahmad said in a written reply.

A major exercise had been initiated to review the system and to identify how best the department can meet the challenge of becoming commercially viable while continuing to fulfill the universal service obligation, he said, adding the policy will take into account these initiatives and their outcomes.

However, the Minister declined to give time frame for the policy saying, "Since the exercise involves inter-departmental consultations, for completion of these initiatives, no specific time frame can be indicated at this juncture".

To another question, Ahmad said Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) was proposing to manufacture CDMA Fixed Wireless Terminals and handsets at Kolkata or Jabalpur or Mumbai through a joint venture company.
