Govt for steps to boost helicopter emergency med services
With some prominent hospitals across the country launching helicopter emergency medical services, the government has evolved concrete proposals to aid this initiative, including encouraging insurance firms to take care of air evacuation in their ...
Among the steps that are being proposed are to ask state governments having chopper fleets at their disposal to render mass casualty evacuation services during natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunami. Official sources said state governments, especially those prone to disasters, should consider integrating helicopter resources within the states as well as in the neighbourhood into their disaster management response system.
Besides allowing operation of private heliports by big business houses, hospitals like Escorts and Appollo in Delhi have started using helicopters for emergency medical aid. For effective use of choppers in emergency medical services role, the Civil Aviation Ministry has already identified two places - Rohini and near DND flyway - in Delhi to develop heliports and staging areas.
The Ministry has asked other states to take similar initiatives in creating suitable heliports or even roof-top facilities to facilitate Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) to cater to mass casualty events. It is also being proposed that the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) encourage insurance firms to extend insurance cover to take care of air evacuation in their mediclaim policies, the sources said.
