Govt employees to get ad hoc bonus
Now, it's time for government babus to hitch on to the bonus bandwagon.
The government has decided to grant ad-hoc bonus to central government employees, central police, para military personnel and armed forces for the year 2006-07.
The non-productivity-linked bonus will be equivalent to 30 days emoluments with an upper ceiling of Rs 2,500. It will cover central government employees in group C and D and all non-gazetted employees in group B, a government source said.
Besides, employees of union territories that follow the central government pattern of emoluments will also be covered, the source added. However, only those employees who were in service on March 31, 2007 and have rendered at least six months of continuous service during 2006-07 will be eligible for such bonus.
Casual labour employed by central government offices will also benefit from this decision. However, the government has put various conditions for them. These include working for 240 days for each year for three years or more.
Some state governments, like West Bengal, have already announced similar bonuses ahead of the festive season. Many other state governments are expected to follow suit.
The move comes close of the heels of hike in dearness allowance for all central government employees. The government had last month raised the DA by 6% to 41%. The hike had put an additional burden of Rs 4,000 crore on the exchequer.
