Govt criticised for importing wheat

Former Prime Minister and Janmorcha leader V P Singh said there was no logic behind importing wheat from Australia when the food grain is very much available with the farmers in the country.

NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister and Janmorcha leader V P Singh on Tuesday said there was no logic behind importing wheat from Australia when the food grain is very much available with the farmers in the country.

"Instead of purchasing from our own farmers, the government is importing 17,500 tonnes of wheat from Australia. This is a great injustice to our farmers," he said at a gathering of farmers at Rajghat, the 'samadhi' of Mahatma Gandhi.

Singh said the farmers would resort to stir against the government move.

He also criticised the government for "evicting the slum dwellers".

"The Delhi government had promised to provide houses to the slum people. Even though five years have passed, not a single house has been provided to the slum dwellers," he said.

CPI secretary D Raja criticised the economic policies of the Centre saying they were in the interest of the MNCs and big business houses.

"The Manmohan Singh government has failed miserably to control the price rise. Left parties have decided to campaign against price rise," he said.
