THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government was considering a one-year moratorium on agricultural loans upto Rs 50,000 and a six-month moratorium on loans upto Rs 2 lakh, state Co-operation Minister G Sudhakaran said on Monday.
The proposal to divide the loans into two slabs to reduce interest rates was also under consideration, he told reporters here.
He said reports of widespread malpractices in co-operative banks and other institutions would be enquired into. Enquiries would be held in all districts and appropriate action taken.
The minister said the government was prepared to open more professional institutions in the co-operative sector if the public came forward to provide the required land.
He said the minimum export price and floor price of coir, abolished by the previous government, would be reinstated to save the coir co-operatives.
Sudhakaran, who also holds Devaswom portfolio, said the government would consider availing loans from Devaswom funds for utilising it for the public's benefit.
Devaswom laws would be amended to suit the changing times and a commission would be appointed to study the matter, the minister said.
