Govt approved World Bank-funded Rs 1,581 crore vocational training programme for upgrading quality of education at 400 Industrial Training Institutes.

NEW DELHI: Government on Thursday approved World Bank-funded Rs 1,581 crore vocational training programme for upgrading quality of education at 400 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), to improve the employability of their students.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the implementation of the Vocational Training Improvement project, under which 75 per cent of the cost would be borne by the Centre and the balance by state governments.
However, in case of north eastern states, the Centre would share 90 per cent of the cost.
The share of the Centre would be Rs 1,231 crore, while the states would bear Rs 350 crore.
"The project aims at improving quality of vocational training, promoting systemic reforms and project management and monitoring," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after the CCEA meeting.
It involves reforms in administrative procedures, linkages with the industry and training programmes for the teachers.
"This approach will bring improvement in internal and external efficiency of the ITIs including employment situation of the certificate holders," Chidambaram said.
