Govt clears changes in National Rural Drinking Water Programme

The government today approved modifications in the rural water supply programme, which seeks to address issues of uncovered areas and ensure safe source of water supply.

NEW DELHI: The government today approved modifications in the rural water supply programme, which seeks to address issues of uncovered areas and ensure safe source of water supply to every habitation.

The modification in the programme called 'National Rural Drinking Water Programme' was approved by the Union Cabinet.

It also approved a special weightage in fund allocation for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) dominated habitations and households with an aim to bring development to the doorstep of the weaker sections of society, said an official release.

Besides, it also approved realignment of the existing sector institutions to support the Panchayati Raj Institutions in fulfilling their responsibility in way of building their capacity to take up the task of management of drinking water supply systems from the village level to upwards, the release said.

Recognising that Desert Development Programme (DDP) areas receive lesser rainfall, the Cabinet increased earmarking of funds for these areas to offset the low allocation to such areas due to lower population density, the release said.
