Government plans to introduce mandatory crash regulations by 2017

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to bring down the high rate of road fatalities, the government plans to introduce mandatory crash regulations by 2017 for new models in the country.

"The government plans to introduce mandatory Crash Regulations by the year 2017 for new models in the country, after the test facilities are developed within the country," Minister of State in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises G M Siddeshwara said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Under the current safety regulations, only seat belts are mandatory, although many manufacturers offer airbags in the higher end variants of different vehicle.

Car manufacturers in India provide various safety features in a vehicle. The essential and primary safety requirement is of seat belt which is now being provided on mandatory basis by all manufacturers.

There are many car models that have airbags as a general feature along with the others and its cost is included in the total price of the car.
