Government for workforce restructuring in BIS

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday strongly advocated restructuring of the Bureau of Indian Standards, saying despite it being a technical organisation, about 75 per cent of the workforce is of a non-technical background.
"It is a burden of history that a specialised institution like the BIS has only 25 per cent or 500 persons out of a total workforce of 2000 from a technical background and the employee-mix must be changed," Consumer Affairs Secretary S Bandhopadhyay said.Addressing a function of the Bureau, he said a plan must be prepared under which the present employee portfolio is altered in phases. He said the idea is not difficult to implement as against retirement of general employees technical staff can be recruited.
The desirable ratio in which the employee-mix can be changed has to be decided by the Bureau itself to ensure that the objectives for which the institution was set up in the first place are realised in a better manner, he added.
BIS fixes quality standards for a wide range of products and issues licences to companies which adhere to these standards.
