Farmers should give away wasteland for industries: FM
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has called upon farmers to give away their non-arable land for setting up industries, while assuring that the government is bound to protect the interests of the peasants.
"It is the duty of the government to protect the interests of the farmers and they too have to agree to give their wasteland and non-arable land for industries," he said at a function here yesterday.
On the "reluctance" of people to give way to industrialisation, Chidambaram said that there would have been no industries if farmers had raised slogans against giving their land decades ago.
Now the country is witnessing good growth, he said while reassuring that the government is concerned about the welfare of farmers.
"It is only for the farmers that the government has increased the procurement prices of rice, wheat and sugarcane".
Further, loans to the tune of Rs 2.25 lakh crore have been disbursed to farmers this year itself, he said while inaugurating a paper mill in the town.
He said that the paper industry was experiencing a fast growth and that it was "right time" to start new mills as the government was encouraging entrepreneur skills of the people.
