Export certification norms made easier
The Customs department has clarified that self-certification of export shipments would be allowed though certain changes have been made in the norms on examination of such consignments.
Except in the case of consignments destined for sensitive ports, 5% of shipments cleared under self-certification would be subject to examination at ports. The clarification is in response to anxious queries from the trade on the status of self-certification scheme.Export shipments are checked at ports to prevent misdeclaration and loss to government on account of duty drawback or import entitlement.
Prevention of overinvoicing is also a reason for such examination at ports. The percentage of export shipments to be examined at ports was earlier fixed at 10%.
This has been reduced to 5% without affecting the self-certification route, the department said. CBEC has conveyed this explanation to officials.
