BANGALORE: The Karnataka government is planning to come out with a semiconductor policy with a special focus on manufacturing of photovoltaic cells/solar panels for energy conservation and efficiency.

The new IT and BT minister, Katta Subramanya Naidu, while interacting with the department officials underscored the need for a fast track mechanism to expedite clearance of IT and BT projects within a period of 30 days.

The new government would be laying special emphasis on electronic hardware manufacturing, he said. Suitable Technology Parks for such activities would be set up in Tumkur and Mysore. Areas in the north-east and north-west of Bangalore have been identified for location of IT and BT Industries. Similarly, IT/BT parks would also be set up in the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Planning Area.

In addition, the minister said, special thrust would be given on IT penetration in rural areas and indicated that a Rural BPO Policy would be framed for taking IT to the masses, thus generating employment and knowledge in rural pockets.

It was also decided that the existing IT and BT policies would be revised in consultation with and taking inputs of the vision group on IT headed by N R Narayana Murthy and vision group on BT headed by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.
