EGoM formed to consider foodgrain procurement, prices

NEW DELHI: The government today constituted an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) to consider issues concerning procuring and managing foodgrain stocks, and revising the central issue prices of foodgrains.

The EGoM, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, will also consider the proposed National Food Security Act, a PMO statement said.

The constitution of the EGoM has been approved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The terms of reference of the EGoM will include issues relating to revising the central issue price (CIP) for wheat and rice and the strategy for procuring foodgrains under the minimum support price operations.

It would also look into the policy for import, export and price management of edible oils, take further position, if required, regarding futures/options for wheat in global commodity exchange after assessing the demand-supply gap and issues relating to the proposed law on food security, the statement said.
