Economic survey on MSMES

The Survey hasn’t been able to quantify the performance of the sector for lack of organised data.

Reserved Items

The government has indicated that it will further prune the list of items reserved for the MSME sector. The Economic Survery says that the phased deletion of products from the list is being continued. In October 2008, the government deleted 14 items from the list. Currently, there are only 21 items reserved for this sector.

Small Issues

The Survey hasnt been able to quantify the performance of the sector for lack of organised data. It has however pointed out that the Fourth All India Census of MSMEs, which is currently being conducted, will create a database for the sector and help in tracking its future growth and development.

Nonetheless, there is admission of the fact that those MSMEs, which undertook manufacturers as subcontracts or as suppliers/ancillaries to larger units and those predominantly in export-oriented sectors, are the most affected.
