The transport ministry has issued draft norms for tyres of four-wheelers that aim to increase the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and enable better braking under wet conditions.

The standard will align the tyre performance with regard to their sound emissions, rolling resistance and adhesion performance on wet surfaces with the stage-II limits of European regulations, a senior government official said.

The ministry of road transport and highways has issued a draft notification which proposes that tyres of cars, buses and trucks shall meet the requirements of rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling sound emissions, as specified in Stage 2 of the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 142:2019, as amended from time to time, the official said.

The rolling resistance of tyres has an influence on fuel efficiency, while wet grip is related to the braking performance of tyres under wet conditions, and the rolling sound emission relates to the sound emitted from the contact between the tyres in motion and the road surface.

These standards, besides adhering to international benchmarks, will also enable the user to make informed decisions, the official said.
